How do I reduce power consumption on a computer from which my printer is shared?

I share a laser printer on my desktop in the basement, so I end up leaving the computer on all the time so we can send print jobs from the laptop at any time. At one time, I used my SMC router to share the printer, but it doesn’t work anymore since I reinstalled Windows XP on the desktop. I can’t remember how to set the router as a print server.

There’s a print driver you need to install on the SMC routers. You can download it from the SMC site below. You’ll need to select the specific model number of your router so that you get the right driver. It then shows up in Windows as a standard printer port. This is the best option rather than leaving a computer on just to print. It’s bad enough to have to keep the printer on, especially if it’s a laser printer…

If you use low power standby on the computer/print server, you’ll have to send it a wakeup packet, which is typically called a “magic packet.” I’ll let the link explain how this works for you. I think the print server on the router is your best option.
